Gymnastics classes were first set up at the Pickaquoy centre 2011, initially as Preschool classes and then progressing to recreational classes. We currently have around 200 gymnasts in our programme ranging from 3 to 16 years old, and a waiting list of approximately 300. We are proud of our low turn over of Gymnasts and our ability to keep children active in Orkney, especially teenage girls.
All our classes are currently run as part of the Junior Programme at the Pickaquoy centre. We have 2 preschool classes, 1 transition class, 4 recreational classes and 2 development groups. Lately we have begun correspondence with Scottish Gymnastics with a view to setting up a club in addition to the recreational classes already available. We are hoping this club environment will give promising and aspiring gymnasts an opportunity to compete and further develop their training and skills.
We currently have 1 UKCC Level 3 General Gymnastics Club Coach, 1 UKCC Level 1 Coach and 6 active UKCC Level 1 Preschool coaches. We have recently set up a shadow coach programme and have 10 new coaches registered on a UKCC Level 1 General gymnastic course in the summer, with a view to developing our programme further.
We formally set up our club in 2017 and with our affiliation with Scottish gymnastics, we now have the supportive network we need for developing our gymnasts and hosting events.
